Myrrh resin is a rubber resin produced by various balsam tree plants (Burseraceae), i.e. a mixture of water-soluble rubber and water-insoluble resin. It emerges as a yellowish-white latex spontaneously or after injuries and hardens in the air. In trade, a distinction is made between Heerabol, Somali, Fadhi or Arabic myrrh, Yemeni and Bisabol myrrh. In addition, grains or larger lumps can be found on the market, which can be yellowish, reddish or brown. The fracture surface is granular. Myrrh smells and tastes very spicy due to its high content of essential oils and sticks to the teeth when chewed.

Commiphora molmol is usually cited as the parent plant of Somali myrrh. The Arabic ware comes from Commiphora abyssinica or Commiphora schimperi. Bisabol myrrh is also called "female myrrh" and is produced by Commiphora erythrea. Male myrrh" is sometimes referred to as the Heerabol product.
Myrrh contains between 2.5 and 10% essential oil, about 40% water soluble gum and about 50% water insoluble resin. In addition to various resin acids, alpha- and beta-herrabol myrrholol, alpha- and beta-Heerabo myrrhol and Heeraboresene are found in the resin. The resin is highly soluble in alcohol and ether, rubber components remain undissolved in alcohol and are often used as gum. Bisabol myrrh, which is often considered a falsification, contains only about 20% resinous components.
Myrrh is used in lacquer production. A traditional use of myrrh is as a fumigant. It is also used as an additive to mouthwashes and tooth tinctures.
