Calcium citrate E 333 tricalcium dicitrate
Calcium citrate is a white, odourless, tasteless solid. The compound is a crystalline powder, also known as tricalcium citrate or calcium salt of citric acid. Calcium citrate is naturally not soluble in water.
In the food industry, calcium citrate is used as a food additive (E 333). Tricalcium citrate is used as an acidity regulator, complexing agent, acidifier and melting salt. Among other things, calcium citrate is used for dried milk, condensed milk, desserts, confectionery, canned fruit, canned vegetables, cut and packaged fruit, cut and packaged vegetables, fruit spreads, meat products, peeled potatoes and organic food. E 333 is one of the few additives that are also permitted in organic food (EU Regulation 2021/1165). Calcium citrate is also used in the cosmetics industry.
Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. It also contributes to normal blood clotting and energy metabolism.
