Sodium Benzoate
Sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, a preservative also known as E 211. It is a white, odourless granulate with a bacteriostatic and fungistatic effect. It inhibits the formation of yeasts, moulds and bacteria. Sodium benzoate is most effective at an acidic pH value (optimum effect at pH < 3.6). It is therefore usually used together with other acidifiers such as citric acid or in foods that naturally have a low pH value. This sodium benzoate comes from European production and is easily soluble in water.
Applications
Sodium benzoate is particularly popular in the food industry as it can be easily incorporated into liquid and semi-liquid products without significantly affecting the flavour or texture. Sodium benzoate is used in many food products, including soft drinks, sauces, dressings, fruit spreads, sweeteners and much more. In addition to its preservative effect, it is also used as a masking agent in the cosmetics industry. Sodium benzoate is also used as a fuel in pyrotechnics.
