Natural rubber resin - Olibanum -
We offer here a rubber olibanum (incense) of the best quality for industrial customers in large quantities, as well as for small customers.
As a gum resin, real incense contains about 20% gum and about 70% alcohol-soluble resin, which contains boswellinic acid, boswellinic acid esters and olibanoreses. It also contains essential oil and Bassorin, a pectin-like substance that swells in water. Little can be said about the solubilities of olibanum due to the partly contradictory behaviour of rubber and resin. The resinous part is well soluble in alcohol, also in ether and chloroform.
Use of Gum Olibanum:
In medicine, incense was sometimes used as an additive to ointments and plasters or in mouthwashes.
However, by far the greater proportion is used as a fumigant. The incense needed by the churches was transported centuries ago on the incense route along the west coast of Arabia to Europe. So-called Indian incense probably did not originate from India but was only called so because it was picked up from Arabia by Indian ships and brought to Europe.
