Stearic Acid Mascid 1802 Flakes
Stearic acid Mascid 1802 is a high-quality, triple-pressed stearic acid. Stearic acid is also known as stearin. It is also called palm wax or stearin wax because stearic acid is obtained from palm oil and has a wax-like structure and melting behaviour. Commercially offered stearic acids are not pure stearic acids but always mixtures of different fatty acids in different proportions. The typical fatty acids are lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid. Some other fatty acids such as margaric acid are present in small proportions. Type 1802 has a comparatively high proportion of stearic acid (approx. 45 - 51 %) and an approx. 48 - 55 % proportion of palmitic acid.
Use of stearic acid
Typical applications are candles, often as an additive to paraffin wax. The addition of stearic acid makes the colour of the paraffin whiter and less transparent. Moreover, the addition of stearic acid makes it possible to optimize the burning time and strength of candles. Since the wick also plays an important role in the burning of candles, a wick specially adapted to stearic acids, such as our flat wick SSD, should be used. This type with a high proportion of stearic acid is particularly suitable for achieving the crystallization effect in candles. However, the formation of the crystals also depends on other factors such as the casting temperature and the cooling rate.
