How to make jar-candles with soywax

Our C3 soy wax is great for pouring candles into jars or tins. Here we explain how it works:

First, make sure you line the work area with a towel or similar. Get everything you need for a water bath ready, as well as the soy wax, wicks and jars/tins, and you're ready to go. You can simply put the jars on the heater while the wax is melting to preheat them.

We recommend that you start with a small amount - practice makes perfect!

1. melting

Heat the wax to a temperature of 71 to max. 93 °C. When melting, stir regularly, but not too vigorously/quickly. This works best in a water bath. (It also works super easy in the Thermomix - but it must be cleaned very thoroughly with wax after use).

2. add colour and/or fragrance

If desired, melt the colour (0.1 - 0.2%) or fragrance (max. 6%) completely in the liquid wax at approx. 80°C and stir. Important: Always colour the wax first before adding fragrance. When colouring, a little trial and error is necessary to achieve the desired colour result. The colour becomes less intense as the wax cools down. By the way, our wax colours are also very suitable for mixing!

3. pour

Reduce the temperature slowly to 50 - 60 °C. It is best to use a thermometer to check the temperature. The surroundings and vessels should not be too cold and the wax not too hot. It is best to attach the wicks to the bottom of the jar/glass using adhesive wax plates. Do not pour the wax into the jars too quickly. You can easily get rid of air bubbles by tapping the container lightly on the base in between. To stabilise the wicks as they cool, place a fork over the jar to support the wick.

4. pour a second layer

If small cracks or irregularities appear, add a thin layer of wax shortly after hardening.

5. hardening

Leave the candles to harden for 24 hours at room temperature. Soy wax candles are usually hardened after a few hours, unlike paraffin candles. However, we recommend waiting a little longer.

6. give away or light them

Homemade candles are super easy to give to others or you can light them for your own enjoyment. If you have used fragrance and still have some wax left over, you can use it to make scented melts - simply pour the leftover wax into small moulds (e.g. praline moulds).
